Acer XK Irons

Like to start off with one of the best deals in golf as my first review. The Acer XK Irons. These come in 4 different versions to suit players of all levels. The last round-up of cubs in the Golf Digest Hot List singled the XK's out for high praise in the Best Value Iron category. These irons combine excellent performance with a very user friendly price tag.

The XK's come in 4 different versions to suit players of all levels.
  • The Pro Version which have less offset and thinner top-lines for more playability
  • The Standards which have more generous offset and confidence inspiring thicker top-lines
  • The High Trajectories with bigger offset, thicker top-lines and wider soles which really help in getting the ball up easier
  • The XK Ladies, designed to work for slower swing speeds and with all the features of the High Trajectories.
First of all the shape. Anybody familiar with the Callaway style of irons will recognize the Acers immediately. Forgiving cavity backs with thicker top-lines, the Acer XK's are classed as a game improvement iron.

Game improvement, but still workable in the Standard and Pro versions. The Pro
version in particular can be worked both sides, but still with the help of the cavity back design. Feed-back is excellent. Hit one off center and you'll know where you went wrong.

That's one of the things I really like about the XK's. Some game improvement iro
ns give about as much feed-back as bouncing a bowling ball of a side-walk.

Not so with the Acers. Hit one
flush and you can really feel the ball taking off. Hit one off the toe or heel and you'll feel the miss-hit. Not uncomfortable but enough to tell you where you went wrong.

Distance with the XK's is excellent. Long, soaring shots that land soft. Distance without control though isn't really what we're after though. With the XK's I was able to control my shots that little bit easier. After a couple of rounds I had these irons pretty much dialed in dead. First rounds I found myself hitting too much club. Approach shots from around 150 yards were flying the greens till I clubbed down from a 7 to an 8. Around a club longer than other irons I've tried.

Custom Assembled with an Apollo stepped steel shaft and a Karma Velvet grip, the Acer XK's
come in at $29.95 per club. For a full set, 3-PW that's under $200 for a set of high quality, custom built irons.
